The Fate of the Furious Strong Opening Weekend Performance in 4DX

Universal’s The Fate of the Furious just had the biggest opening weekend in box office history. The eighth installment in the Fast & Furious franchise smashed a record previously held by 2015’s Star Wars - Episode VII: The Force Awakens with an astonishing $529 million in its first three days worldwide. The film also had a strong showing across select theaters showcasing a new super-premium format called 4DX, which combines motion-enabled chairs as well as fog, rain, lightning, scent, wind and other elements to fully immerse the audience in the film.

The Fate of the Furious had a strong opening weekend performance in 4DX, with highest U.S. occupancy rates in LA (91%), NY (83%) and Orlando (74%). Internationally, the strongest market was France (97%), with Switzerland, England, Czech, Mexico, Portugal and Turkey each seeing more than 70% occupancy rates for the weekend.

“We believe that the perfectly synchronized 4DX effects will provide a strong complement to the tremendous action in The Fate of the Furious, stretching the imagination and drawing moviegoers into the story,” said, Tae-Yoon,Yoon, creative director at 4DX’s i-Studio.

4DX is the first and leading 4D cinema technology for feature films, providing moviegoers with an immersive cinematic experience that utilizes all five senses, allowing the audience to connect with movies through motion, vibration, water, wind, snow, lightning, scents, and other special effects that enhance the visuals on-screen. Each auditorium incorporates motion-based seating synchronized with more than 20 different effects and optimized by a team of skilled editors, maximizing the feeling of immersion within the movie, beyond the limits of audio and video. Since 2009, more than 420 Hollywood titles have been screened in 4DX. As of April 2017, 45,000-plus 4DX seats operate in 370 auditoriums spanning 47 countries.
