4DX Continues Strong Performance in Japan, Accounting for More Than 10% of Box Office Gross for Summer’s Top Films in the Country

CJ 4DPLEX Credits Success in Japan to Mix of Hollywood Blockbusters and Local Japanese Films,

Led by ‘Transformers: The Last Knight,’ ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

SEOUL AND LOS ANGELES  September 26, 2017, Release in Japan – CJ 4DPLEX, the leading 4D cinema company, has today announced that 4DX has been showing the remarkable box office success in Japan with this summer’s top grossing titles.

This success has been led by a mix of Hollywood blockbusters and local Japanese films.  In particular, this summer’s mega-hit franchises, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,”Transformers: The Last Knight,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” were key drivers, with 4DX accounting for more than 10% of the box office gross for each release (10.4%, 10.4% and 10.2%, respectively). This is significantly higher than the typical 4DX box office share in Japan (7%).

Since its Japan debut in 2013, 4DX has attracted almost 5.3 million moviegoers in Japan to see 140 titles showcased in the immersive format. The number of local Japanese films shown in 4DX has also increased each year, from nine in 2015 to eleven in 2016, and eleven in 2017 to date, with more to come. Most recently, these include Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, King of Prism: Pride the Hero, and KanColle: The Movie.

4DX continues to receive enthusiastic reactions from Japanese fans as its expansion in Japan further solidifies it as a popular premium cinema option, while helping CJ 4DPLEX prove its unique brand value.

An innovative and state-of-the-art technology, 4DX not only stimulates one’s eyes and ears but virtually every sense by focusing on each film’s core creative aspects. By considering the unique attributes and emotional characteristics of a movie, the CJ 4DPLEX production team is able to impact the way moviegoers experience the overall tone and style while seated in the theatre. The CJ 4DPLEX team carefully ensures that each 4DX moment is specially tailored and carefully choreographed for the particular film, stimulating moviegoers without audio/visual limitations.

Japan now has 52 screens equipped with 4DX technology, accounting for 13% of all worldwide screens that feature 4DX – with motion seats and environmental effects such as wind, rain, bursts of air and various scents that add a unique layer of immersion and excitement to the moviegoing experience.  4DX' sister technology, the multi-projection ScreenX format, debuted in Japan this June to positive reviews from Japanese movie fans, and is being recognized as a major force for the future of Japanese cinema.

"4DX in Japan has already become a mainstream format that provides an innovative moviegoing experience. We hope not to merely rest on our laurels but to solidify our valuable position in Japan as an innovative cinema brand,” said, Byung-Hwan, Choi, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX.
