Film Journal (January 4, 2016)

CJ 4DPLEX, an immersive theatre technology featuring moving seats and environmental effects, opened 12 new 4DX theatres in their fastest-growing market, Japan, in December. The 12 screens were the result of partnerships with five different cinema exhibitors?AEON Cinemas, United Cinemas, 109 Cinemas, US Cinemas and Korona World.

In 2015, Japanese exhibitors added 25 screens, bringing the total number operated in the country to 33. 4DX has seen dramatic growth, increasing he number of theatres over four times in comparison with eight sites installed in 2014. Attendance is also up over three times compared to the previous year.

United Cinema Toyosu had an average occupancy rate of 60% in 2015, a much higher rate than non-4DX screens in Japan. United Cinemas has rolled out additional 4DX theatres in Maebashi, Sapporo, Kasukabe, Nigata, Toshimaen, Iruma, Mito, Hirakata, Canal City, and Kashihara.

4DX recently added a 4DX theatre in Minatomirai, Yokohama, through their partnership with AEON Cinemas, the largest cinema chain in Japan. 109 Cinemas added a fourth 4DX theatre in Sano to its total.
